I think anyone driving in areas of research should consider a good quality dash camera preferably with night vision

True 100% no exceptions, at least one. The thing is, when you're driving with your headlights on, the camera is recording the lights from your headlights, not the IR LEDs it has. So then it boils down to the low light sensitivity of the units sensor and the overall quality of the video recording. If you are parked with no headlights then the cam will switch to night mode and what may be seen with the tiny 6 IR LEDs would be recorded in IR mode. The light from the IR LEDs are also reflected back off the windshield, pfft pretty worthless. IF that the case, then you not only want a camera that records in "night vision" you want to have some higher power IR light on your vehicle to illuminate the area. Which is why I own a couple of www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00M3O5ERKIf you just want to record quality while driving down endless logging roads, a modern GoPro or that type camera is fine. Even the 4K cams are pretty cheap, I own a couple of these www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KE6RQ6QThey make a www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JXNX6BU that plugs in instead of the battery that works fine, I have a couple. Just my $0.02CND into the idea of night vision.
Please be aware, that night vision dashcams (or any camera) use IR light instead of visible light to capture images when dark. However as most of the IR light source is usually from on-board IR LEDs, and they are mounted right by the lens, so when you place that by a window (your windscreen) you will get nothing but glare.
SO - you are best to turn them off, and use an external source, OR just get a dashcam and remove the wee little IR filter from the front ... then your headlights will work just fine as well for providing enough illumination.

Another good thing to carry while doing cryptid research is binoculars, espeically is the creature is airborne, aquatic or far off in the distance on land. Magnifying glasses are also good if you need to look at things (i.e., tracks in the soft ground to see anything of interest like skin flakes) more closely. I also paper envelopes and tweezers for evidence collection-----never EVER use plastic bags to store evidence! Learned that from David Gordon's sasquatch manual and am hell-bent on applying it.

Good quality binoculars help with light gathering in low light conditions A good spotting scope could help scan a hillside or lake, especially if you can mount a camera to it

Especially if the subject is at a distance and when visibility conditions are not exactly stellar......those are excellent times to use that type of equipment. BTW Bill, do you know when any fieldwork with the BCSCC is happening? I'm nearing the end of my college semester and I'm eager to start doing fieldwork---both in my home valley and with the BCSCc/SasquatchBC. Just asking.....

It will be interesting how the new Garmin InReach mini works once it goes on sale.
