Quite true island! It is also too easy for people to misaim their firarms and miss. With a bear spray, it covers a wider area so it may not be dead-on but it still act as quite a deterrent.

I've read stats that bears were turned away more often from spray than from bullets. I have a large can of Udemy bear spray, I might snag a fresher one before the trip. I accidentally hit the trigger on that can one day while moving some stuff around in my rig; got a blast from 2' away right in the stomach and arm. I've worn the bear spray, an air horn and road flares on my person before at the same time. Still looking in to a hand gun.

I want to get one of those 16" mini 3 shot 12ga pump shotguns.
They weigh 5 pounds and can be worn with ease for fast yielding if need be. But you need a handgun license to own one so I will be probably going a another route until then I carry bear spray , with the trigger lock removed I might add.
I have a fear that those pull tab release buttons will become impossible to remove under a panicked situation.
I think its best to carry the spray with the safety off , as does capt Morgan judging by his last post. As bears *can* be frightening if they won't back down , which I have had happen more than once.

It seems all the guns I want cost about a grand , that 12ga you linked is nice ! and portable , $949.99 about $500 to much for my budget.
I may buy a used junior lightweight shotgun and shorten its barrel but keep it within the unrestricted spec.
Also your ranch hand is kick ass

I went back and looked at it , in the photo it looks like its nearly as big as a full size 12 ga , but its a 12.5" barrel so its got to be a pretty short gun in the hand.
I am reading the gun laws to find out what length of shotguns are non restricted , 26" may be it but I'm still reading.
now I'm thinking about getting a used $1000 at one time featherweight shotgun and shorten its aluminum barrel
4lbs or so would be a nice weight !

You can't shorten the barrel less then 18 inches or it becomes prohibited However the manufacturer can make it smaller as long as it keeps a certain overall length Grizzly makes a 5 shot magazine model shotgun with an 8 1/2 inch barrel

Billr that gun is perfect! for my situation being just 5lbs ! I am going to try to find one as its out of stock atm I have invested a fair bit of money in lightweight backpacking gear so I can travel without feeling like a pack mule. Price is right ! If people think its silly to pack a shotgun into the backwoods its because they are not the ones traveling threw bush and sleeping under a tarp in cougar / bear country. ( or I could bring a friend with a bum leg) Edit: I just watched a video on the backpacker 12ga , it is not the sturdiest gun good for its price but I think I will look for a different model , a used gun that is tight by design.
