INTERVIEW WITH WITNESS.
Steenburg note: This interview with the witness was conducted 3 days after his encounter and about 4 hours after he had spoken with researcher Jason Cain. After introductions we just dove right into it.
When you saw this subject were you traveling north or south at that time?
I was traveling south.
The subject was south of your position?
It was south of my position by about oh, 800 to 1000 meters.
What did you see?
I saw something large, my best guess, like I have been a hunter and grown up in the wilderness most of my life. I saw something, minimum of 6 feet, walking on two legs, at a very fast rate of pace, cross the road in front of me. At the time, like I told your college, (Jason Cain), the night before in the same general area, they were doing some movie filming.
Do you recall what movie was being filmed?
No, there were just some set parts on the side of the road, set police cars and that, quite often they will leave stuff over night and have a security guard there for the evening guarding everything, and when I saw this, at the time it was 6 in the morning, and I thought it was just a security guard crossing the road, and as I got closer I realized there were no vehs there at all, and I slowed down and I looked, the ditches are about 7 feet wide, or 8 feet wide on both sides of the road there and probably 6 feet deep, full of water. There was nothing in sight, anywhere along there? I slowed down to look, it was bothering on me that I seen something that I couldn’t explain. So I went back a few hours later, parked and walked along, and I found one spot where something had crossed through the tall grass and knocked it over, in only one spot so it lined up with what I had seen on both sides of the road. I walked the whole area maybe half a kilometer both ways from where I parked, that was the only area where the grass was knocked down, there was evidence that something had crossed the ditches on both sides, because the ditches are full of what I call pond scum? I’ve got photographs to show the area where something had crossed the pond scum was broken up and not there, and the ditches disturbed. I also found scat in the area that I have never seen anything like it before in my life. Most animal scat that I have ever seen is rather bark in color, dark brown, blackish, this was very slimy, it was fresh, gray in color, long in lengths, more human like. I took pictures and video of the whole area. I didn’t’ cross ether ditch because I wasn’t about to go through neck deep scum water, (Laughs).
Do you have a few minutes to answer some more questions?
No problem.
Would you state your full name?
(Withheld from written report)
Do you wish to remain confidential?
At this point I would, yes, (Laughs).
What is your present mailing address?
(Withheld from written report)
You live at Pit Lake?
Yes.
Nice place.
Yeah.
Your phone number is the same as what you reported, 604- (Withheld from written report}
Yes it is.
What is your occupation?
My occupation is a generator specialist; I work on large electrical generators for General Electric, up to and including nuclear turbines. I have a high level of security clearance.
How old are you?
I’ll be 57 in January.
Do you ware corrective lenses?
For reading. There bifocals, the upper part is so minimal that I can operate just fine with out them.
Were you warring them at the time of this incident?
I ware them all the time, you know, one of those things that, you just get used to warring them.
So that’s a yes?
Yes.
Ware did this incident occur?
I was proxy 1 and half miles north of Swami set golf course. About 1 and half miles.
So you were south of the wildlife reserve?
Yes south of the, its not really a reserve, it’s a small island that they have property on, nobody actually lives there, its just band property.
[Steenburg note: On site investigation reveled that he was not south of the reserve but in it.]
What date did this take place?
This past Friday the 12.
12th of July 2013?
Yeah between 6 and 6:05 am.
Describe the area for me.
Well the road is a long straight stretch for 4 or 5 miles, dead flat, for the most part of it, it is open, swamp land, marsh. There is a section were I saw the subject, that has ever green trees, on both sides, and that’s where it happened, where I saw the what ever, (Laughs).
What were you doing in the area at the time?
I was heading to work, in my vehicle.
You were heading south?
I was driving south.
This happed on Rannie road, is that how it’s pronounced?
Rannie road, yes.
What distance would you estimate you were from the subject when you saw it?
About 800 to 1000 meters.
What color was it?
Dark color. That’s all I can say. At that distance if you can pick out color your eyes are really, really good. (laughs)
What was your first impression?
I thought it was a security guard crossing the road. And when I got close to where it was, I realized there was nothing there to guard.
[Steenburg Note: For a few days before this incident a film crew of some kind had props and sets in this location with security hired to watch over things at night. Thus explains why the witness thought that perhaps he was seeing one of the guards before he realized that the film props and equipment were now gone.]
I slowed down; I thought that was strange, slowed right down to about 10 kilometers an hour, I drove by looking for something in the ditch. I saw nothing.
Did it cross right to left or left to right?
East to west.
Driver side to passenger side?
Correct. It crossed the road in less; I would say less than 2 seconds or very close to it.
After it crossed the road how long were you able to observe it?
That was it, it was gone, it crossed the road, because of the perspective views you had at that distance, it was right at the north end of the tree area, the perspective view that you have your into the trees, there by you are looking into a darker area, can not see something dark.
How did you react when you saw it?
Well once I went by and realized there was nothing there I was, kind of, inquisitive, like you know, I would say, it started to bother me, it started to work on me actually, like you know, did I see what I think I saw? It started to bother me, but I saw something that I can’t explain, it wasn’t there when I got there, but I know what I saw, It was tall and narrow, Lie I said I grew up hunting in the Yukon, since I was 10 years old, I have hunted all my life, so I know what animals look like in the bush.
What was it doing?
It was crossing the road, quickly.
Could you see if it was hair covered?
At that distance no.
Did it stand and walk upright?
It was walking upright.
Did you ever see go down on all fours?
Never. It never went down on all fours.
How tall do you think it was?
6 feet plus. At that distance I mean at that distance, as quick as it was, and how big it was it has to be 6 feet plus. Or at lest that tall.
How heavy do you think it was?
At that distance, I couldn’t tell about body mass. It looked large, But I couldn’t tell about body mass, sorry.
How long did you see it for?
I would say two, two and half seconds, tops.
Did it see you?
I couldn’t tell you.
Did you see any facial features?
No, all I saw was something; I would call it Hominid, crossing the road at a high rate of speed. Not running. But quickly, what would you call it, a fast walking pace.
Could you tell if it was male or female?
No I couldn’t.
Could you see arms?
Um, honestly, I couldn’t say yes or no.
Did it make any sound at all?
I wouldn’t hear even if it did, I have bad hearing and I am in my truck, and about 800 to 1000 meters away.
Did you smell anything before during or after?
No.
Steenburg note: Here the witness may be tired of my questions as at this point in the interview he makes the following statement.
I’ll tell you what I do know. I went to work, I text my girlfriend a minute or to after seeing it, saying, “I think I just saw a sasquatch”, she text me back saying, “Really”, I replied “Yeah”, It bothered me, I went to work, it bothered me, I went to my boss, and said look I can’t stay at work today, this is bothering me, I’ve got to back and see if what I saw was true or not. So I took the day off from work, I went back and parked my truck in this wooded area, you know, the wooded area is about a mile long, parked in the middle and headed down northeast side of the road, got about 60 yards from where I parked, I found where the grass, tall, I don’t know what kind of grass it is, had been knocked down, by this time it was 3 to 4 hours later, the grass had been knocked down, knocked down both ways, um, I walked to the end of the wooded area, crossed over the road, walked back, and I noticed on the other side there was the same trail, and continued on past that to the end, and walked back along the other side, it was the only place in the area where the grass had been disturbed. Were talking that the grass there is about 3 feet high, ok, from there I walked, I took my video camera and my cell phone, I walked along side of where the grass had been trampled, so as not to disturb anything. Looking for some kind of tracks, um, I couldn’t see any defined tracks, because that are they quite often mow the grass, and it is very thick with what you would call, umm, Mulch. There were some depressions, not definite; I walked to the edge of the ditch on one side. You could see where something had crossed through the water because the pond scum had been broken up. I then went to the other side, because the grass had been bent down in both directions. I went to the east side, looked in the ditch, right at the very edge of the ditch, they drop off very quick there, there was a large depression, almost like a heel mark, were the edge of the ditch broke away, and slid down into the water. Were talking, this is kind of like a v shaped depression, about 24 inches long into the water. Again on that side also you see where the scum on the water had been disturbed. I took photos of all that, video as well.
Steenburg note; The witness continued to talk for sometime, about a pile of scat he found not to far from the path in the grass which at the time he thought might have came from the subject he saw. My self on the site, later with came to the conclusion that this was bear scat, due to the fact it had parts of a plastic bag in it which meant that it was a garbage feeder, I saw no reason to concluded that the scat had anything to do with what he saw unless of course it was a bear he saw. The interview continues.
You did all this the same day it happened?
Yes.
Did you report what you saw?
To you guys only.
No R.C.M .P, or anything like that?
No, (Laughs) I don’t want to be called totally crazy. (Laughs)
You are familiar with recognizing large game?
I can recognize any game, I’ve killed just about every large animal west of the Rockies, and up to the Yukon Grizzly bear. I have come face to face with Grizzly bears. I consider myself a very experienced outdoors man. I live in the outdoors, defiantly know bears, shot several of them, the last one, a very large one right on my door step.
Where they’re any other witnesses?
No there was not.
What do you think it was?
I don’t know. Something tall, walking vertically, it was big.
You are not prepared to say defiantly that it was a Sasquatch?
Well, it really is the only thing that fits the description of what I saw. I know there’s a lot of folklore around Pit Lake, I have friends who, unless they know you really well, they won’t admit that they have seen them. Until this happened I have never seen anything or any tracks at any time.
Just tell me what happened one more time.
Well like I said I was driving along, heading south, I was doing proxy 80 kms per hour, Something large, vertical, two legged crossed the road in about 2 and half seconds. I figured it was a security guard, but there was no cars there, or movie props, no nothing, nothing on ether side of the road, that’s about all I can say.
What made you decide it could not have been a man you saw?
It crossed the road to fast. A man would half to all out running to cross the road at that speed, this thing was not running. At least it didn’t look like a running stance.
Are you bothered by what you saw?
A little bothered, yeah. I would like to know the truth.
Steenburg note: That concluded the interview, we talked for quite awhile after this and I did my best to answer the witness’s questions about the subject in general. The next day I met him at the location of his encounter and the path made by the subject was still there in the long grass on both sides of the road so it appears that whatever he saw came out of the tree line, went through a deep water filled ditch, crossed the deep grass, then the road, through the deep grass on the west side and through another deep water filled ditch before disappearing in the tree line. The scat pile about 30 yards north of the path was probably bear scat I concluded. Both Jason Cain and myself were impressed by this witness, in fact when Jason played for me a recording of his interview with this man, I detected no contradiction with what he had told me.
