Hello All. I guess you could say im new to this community. Only knowledge base is from what ive read with no real field experience. Will say i emailed Gerry about a year ago with a general question and he took the time to respond and was great. May take me a while to get up to speed. Am planning my first field excursion and was thinking to drive up one? of the forest service roads along Harrison lake or mabey Chahelous area. All i can bring is a digital camera with 3x zoom. Just two general questions to throw out there if i could?
1. Other than glassing clearcuts for activity, what other things should I be doing? Should i be looking for tracks by walking riverbeds/track leaving areas?
2. I guess my second question would be a realisticaly speaking is there a definatitive way to convice the scientific community of Sasquatch existance without someone shooting one? Disclaimer ..lol, i am neither advocating nor not. In other words what is the purpose of collecting more evidence regardless of quality, only to have more debunkers or skeptics. The Patterson film was pretty convincing to me right down to the flesh and skin movement as ran + the gait. Yet it surprises me somewhat as to the amount of determined skeptics. Science as a discipline is great but it has a strict set of laws. I understand bones or high quality video would win many over within scientific community and could result in more funding for research but...is it enough to have Sasquatch recognized immediatley? Is there a way a single reasearcher can discover the grail so to speak and provide indisputable proof without actually using a rifle? Finding a dead body not decomposed? How would one do that and anyone have any estimates on possible Sasquatch pop. in SW BC? Are Sasquatchs similiar to other game with some populations staying in a general geographic area for there lives and others more nomadic?
Apologies for the length, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Tnks, Steven

Personally I think no matter how good a picture or film, no one will believe it given how easy it is to fake it. The only thing that will win over the scientific community, in my opinion, is bones, and not just body bones but a skull and preferably a bunch of them, such as you'd find in a cave pit used to dispose of the bodies.
Most of the hominid bones of significance found to date were found in caves like that. So your best bet is to become an avid caver in sasquatch country, and learn what to do when you find something.
There's another post here somewhere on that.
Basically, maybe take a tooth or two, but don't disturb anything, and don't take bones out yourself. Take lots of good quality pictures and measurements, post them on the internet, and approach an official body like a local university to undertake the archaeological dig. Sebastian knows who best to contact from around here, I guess. He knows more about that angle of things.
If you find a living wounded sasquatch or a freshly dead one, that would be incredible luck and again, you'd have to contact the right people. It goes without saying, though, that such a situation would be very dangerous given the likelihood of it's family being nearby and wanting to get revenge, clean up the evidence or whatever. I think in a situation like that I'd take pictures, maybe chop off a finger off a dead one (DNA evidence), and get the heck out of dodge. Of course, making sure to remember how to get back there.
If there's a bunch of you, you could pack out the body I guess, but how unlikely is that?

By the way, there was apparently a sasquatch cave in the early accounts, near Hwy one up by Yale (beyond Hope). It was hidden by a big stone near the entrance.

Hello Steve. In fact there is no real evidence that the sasquatch makes use of caves at all, other than maybe stepping into one to get out of bad weather. There are many caver's and caver groups and not once have they found anything that could be sasquatch related. Witnesses have reported coming across these creature resting or sleeping, and in all cases the creatures in question other than resting under large bushy trees don't seem concerned about the weather at all. Most of the old stories from the distant past are just that stories. having never been followed up on, and of course back than no body was separating reasonable from mythical. Some today still do not. Also the fact remains the the world of science needs hard physical evidence, Body or peace of a body, now I suppose if you ever managed to get a real good close up video of one of almost National Geographic quality, that might get some of the scientific community to start looking into the matter. but the odds of achieving this is so high you probably have more of a chance of winning a big lottery prise. But we keep plugging on in spite of the odds. Searching creek beds and shore lines and roadsides are probably the best way to eventually come across interesting footprints. and driving back roads at night or during the day for that matter will slightly increase chances of seeing one of these creatures. Just make sure that camera of yours is ready at a moments notice, for any delay of a second or to and the subject is no longer in sight and you will be just another guy claiming to have seen a sasquatch.

HI Steve, "1. Other than glassing clearcuts for activity, what other things should I be doing? Should i be looking for tracks by walking riverbeds/track leaving areas? "
I think right now the best bet is to check out the area with pervious sighting report(s). It will be all depended on luck, may be observational skill as well. Since sasquatch sightings yield no information on pattern, the best chance to encounter one/finding evidence is to get out to the field/a target area regularly.
"2. I guess my second question would be a realisticaly speaking is there a definatitive way to convice the scientific community of Sasquatch existance without someone shooting one?"
As Thomas said, a high quality video or still picture may open eyes. Getting the facial features on video/still picture will be ideal. Right now HD camcorders' prices have dropped dramatically. HD footage will meet or exceed NG quality (if you have steady hands). Finding bones/teeth will be the best way to prove the existence of Sasquatch. The problem is where to find them. Northwest coast here, the soil is quite acidic. No bone material will last more than a few years. Only micro-environments of both natural and artificial, such as limestone caves or shell middens will have bone material preserved. Robert Alley's "Raincoast Sasquatch" has a few cases of bones found in Alaska. He also suggested the second molar (with specific cusp pattern) is the best tooth for identification.
There is no evidence indicates sasquatch use cave. But there is also no reason why this speculation should not be explored. Cave exploration can be very dangerous and personally I don't know any cave site of sasquatch related. To explore this field, I think it is better to contact some local cave diving experts first. I always think that sasuatch research is a great way to enjoy the great outdoor. But play it safe first.
cheers, seb

There needs to be good research on Bigfoot behaviour. I have not come accross such research. I think it's a vital component to getting solid evidence.
I am convinced there are ways to improve chances of a sighting by closely observing behaviours in accounts. Unfortunately what I have determined on Bigfoot behaviour and trying to increase the chance of a sighting involves doing some scary backcountry explore alone or in a very small group. The smaller the group, the better.
It seems when a Sasquatch approaches a person or people it is when they are in their own territory. Bigfoot seem to be semi-territorial. And they will harass and intimidate if they have a high confidence level. Maybe protecting local food source or just don't want other's in their area.
I for one am very unwilling to go hiking by myself to get a Bigfoot to chase me out of the area. Not my idea of fun. It is also possible that Dogs might attract Bigfoot as potential dinner.
Other than this, I think the chances of sighting a Bigfoot is going to be extremely unpredictable.

Hi Steve, I think that your plan to drive the Chehalis and Harrison backroads could be productive. I have found tracks on those roads that were smoking hot. Unfortunately, a vehicle will probably be heard (mine is quite noisy) and you will probably only get a quick glimse but you can cover a lot of ground in a very sparcely populated area. If you are in good shape, walking those roads could produce a longer unspooked sighting. You would regret it if you weren't properly equipped with a better camera. I have a digital camcorder and got a 6mp 12x image stabilized still camera this Christmas which I haven't field tested yet. It allows handheld shots at full zoom in good lighting conditions. I plan to be prepared the next time I scare a sasquatch out of a clearcut ( I sure hope it gives me time to power up and shoot). If you like, you could join me on one of my trip up the west side of Harrison Lake. I think that the roads might be clear enough in a few weeks.

Tnks for the technical info as ill have to upgrade my stuff. I think i would absolutley hate winning the lotto and seeing one + having a crap camera..lol..Think ill head up with the girlfriend a few times to get my feet wet + thanks for the kind offer bearhunter may just take you up on it.
