I have been a long time sas enthusiast.
I have been working in the woods as a forest engineer for about 20 years and covered alot of ground during my career. All of my work has been around Powell River and the Coast Mountains.
I recently started working for the Klahoose Band in the Toba River Valley.....I gotta say that with the recent upgrades to the road access in the valley there is some prime sasquatch reseach potential.... considering that this is where Albert got carried away.
There has been to my knowledge some sightings up there since all the work has started on the Plutonic Power Project. One guy Sam.....swore on his life he seen one at 23 km on the mainline crossing the road and the sas acted quite aggresive towards him and the pickup. Another sighting was just behind camp(29 km) last winter, I couldn't get to many details on it.
I have also had some experiences prior to being in the Toba Valley. I heard what i think are territorial calls in Jervis Inlet in 2004.
They were quite incredible and witnessed by my coworker when I was camped just north of Deserted Bay.
My sas enthusiasm was all an all time high but slowly diminished until recently while working in Toba.
I have seen some things up there that have rekindled my curiousity again.
Toba is unlike anywhere I've been in....things grow really big there! Same as Bute Inlet, it is not uncommon to see a 1500 pound Grizzly walk across the road.
So my question is.......has anybody ever done any reseach in the Toba, Daniels, Bute or Goat Lake area?
If not.......I am.
I will be working in the valley for the next little while so I will keep everyone posted.

Who was it that had these sightings? My brother works on the Hydro project in Toba Inlet. He hasn't heard of any sightings up there. One would think that a sighting would be a pretty big topic around camp. And again, no pictures or anything to accompany? It's very wet up in there. You'd think that he could have gotten pics of the tracks later if he didn't have a camera at the time. I know my brother always has his camera with him up there, even in the heavy machinery he's operating. Best of luck to you. But, please keep a camera close by. Has the Klahoose Band been able to share any stories?

The guy who had the sighting was named Sam, he was rock scaler up there who unfortunatly was killed in a rock falling accident.......his "critter card" is posted on the main bullitin board on the wall just outside the cafateria. He never truly reported it to anyone that would ever do anything about i guess. I am sure all he did was fill out the critter card and that was all.....too bad nothing ever happened with it.
I have spoken to a couple of the Klahoose people I know and when I ask about sas, they give a big smaile and say.......ya he's here. One of the youger guys I spoke with said that his ancestors always would see them, meaning more than 1 fishing at the Tuhumming River, just above where the new #1 bridge is now.
The funnie thing about camp is, not to many people will openly talk about it, for the fact they might get shut down, there is alot of social politics that go on around there an sas just isn't a good topic to bring up in your ride to work.
The people who work on the power project stay in a camp surrounded by an electric fence, they drive to the back and forth from the worksite and never leave the main road and i never see them anywhere but, ask your bro he'll tell ya........they call it Tobatraz for a reason......so the chances of seeing a sas for them are pretty slim.
I have been up and down the valley, dropped off in heli's everywhere up there and i am slowly figuring it out. Toba has massive mountain ridges that interconnect and they have certain places where the animals pretty much have to go to get to the next ridge, these are the places to look.
After reading Albert Ostmans story I figure he got kidnapped and ended somewhere close to where camp is, only on the south side of Racoon Creek, his desciptions are pretty errie when you know the valley. He also decribed his route to escape an it is pretty exact on him crossing the north powell divide and south powell divide and ending up in Salmon arm.
I am slowly getting more info as i go along, we may be snowed out soon, but i am working on getting my snowmobiles up there to really do some searchin.
I woner if sas hibernates?

Very interesting. Yes, do keep a camera handy and also a tape measure, a couple of new sandwich bags in case you find poop or hair and if you do, pop them into a freezer asap, dated and labeled (you don't want your wife or mom mistaking it for last year's apple sauce, ha ha). Valuable DNA samples, the fresher the better!
Thanks for the heads up, and I hope someone near there is able to help you out with that.

what is sam's full name? in what way did it act aggressive toward him and his truck? why no details about the sighting right behind the camp? all of these are so very, very vague with nothing to show. how are there no pictures of the area the bf ran across the road and acted aggressive? why do you not share with us what you've seen up there that has rekindled your curiousity? why on earth would talking about bf get the site shut down? that doesn't even make the littlest bit of sense and is just so unrealistic to even say. and you say the chances for them to be seeing a bf are pretty slim because they are locked up in a prison and hurry to their work and rush right back into their "safe" compound when they are done. but..........it was guys from that very camp that had those sightings you are talking about. ummmm, okay? and no update in over two years. what came of your research up there?

not sure what your point is, I didn't say there were no bears there. What I did say was that 1,500 lbs bears would not be common Very rarely do coastal brown bears get over 1,200 lbs let alone 1,500 lbs If your photo's are meant to show the average bear as being much less than 1,500 lbs, I would agree that none of the bears in those photo's look to be truly huge bears

I have to concur with Bill on this one, 1,500 coastal bears are anything but the norm - in fact I have never heard of such a large beast. I am not saying that it isn't possible, but certainly not some you'd see all the time if ever. Richard

sorry billr.
i was actually posting that to show the inaccuracies of the original post. i hate when someone makes claims with nothing at all to support them in any way. especially when some of those claims are completely false and misleading others on here.
the bear photos were to show that indeed the majority of the bears seen up there are nowhere near 1500 lbs. i'm not suggesting there aren't some large ones in there, but they sure aren't the majority.
i just wanted to show some pictures of the area that was being discussed since the op didn't back up anything he was saying with any.
and i still find it odd that he brought all this up, yet didn't share any of his bf experiences that he hinted at. maybe he was saving them for another post.

i've confirmed from my brother that indeed the camp was surrounded by an electric "bear" fence. he said that all the camps he's been in are, even up in diavik. they are not there because of bf sightings and fears.
but i still hate when someone makes claims and then backs them up with nothing. or never comes back to give updates on their thread. plus, i'd be really intrigued to hear what became of tobatrekker's search.

talked more to my brother. there were never, ever any bf sightings in the whole time he was in that camp, and he was there for the duration. he even went back in there for the wrap-up.
the only bf referencees that he is even aware of, are the location markers that he's seen of very old bf reports(probably ostman's) that he's seen on the internet.
he laughs at the suggestion that there were any bf reports near the camp. km 29 is where he mainly worked and the gravel pit is located. he would know 100% if any sightings happened. when i relayed tobatrekker's claims, he laughed and said that that's a bunch of bs.
also, guy's routinely go for jogs outside camp and also go down to that water and fish. he can't believe such ridiculous claims were being said. and he's never, ever heard the term "tobatraz".
so, clearly, tobatrekker's stories are just that, stories.
