Has anyone thought about using a hot air balloon and FLIR for the search? This would enable the search of a vast area without noise or odor. With the balloon tethered to, say a boat, it would be fairly safe and easily moved without having to be at the mercy of the winds.
Just a thought.

A hotair balloon, no. But I had the thought of using a surplus weather balloon with a Nightvision/FLIR camera on it. But after reading about how damned difficult they can be to control, I abandoned the idea totally. The thought of my Nightvision unit slowly sinking into Pyramid Lake sent shivers through me.

That's your only argument? Both of these things are easily overcome. A manned balloon with helium would eliminate the noise of the burner. A dual tether would significantly reduce any drift from wind. A three point tether would eliminate drift. the electronics can be housed in weatherproof, waterproof housing. Even flotation can be applied easily with foam and duct tape...
Really now... How 'bout looking for ways to do these things instead of desperately searching for ways they wont work?

You asked about balloons, I gave my opinion. Simple as that.
