Tree knocking! You know where that one came from? It came from an old indian tale that squatch used large limbs to whack against tree trunks! Why? No one knows. Was one ever seen doing this? Not really. Was it commonly accepted by indians? I don't think so. I have only ever heard one account of such a story. However, you cannot settle down to enjoy a single squatch documentary without someone attesting to the virtues of whacking on a deadfall log with a smaller log. And then listening for a response! There are those who claim success with this 'tried and true' method. What are the odds that it is a response from another human who just merely heard the original thunk? Whatdoyathink?

Hi Gerry! Just a qwik note from Greenwood! (yes, i have satellite internet, if you can beleive it!!) First off, wonder to have met you and part of the crew! You guys are awesome! Loved the drive up Cheame Mtn...it was a bit sketchy on some parts of the road - got tonnes of photos! Second, tree knocking. I was thinking about the tree knocking i hear all the time up at the pond up the mountain on my property. I hear it all the time up there - its the wind knocking the trees together...pretty cool sound. It's not the same thing, obviously if there was no wind - actually, i just assumed it was the wind doing it! I'll pay better attention when i'm up there! Could be bears too - tonnes of them around here this time of the year! I'm definitely gonna try this knocking though!! thanks for the post Chrissie

I think clacking stones together might be a better idea. If you heard that you'd know it was either BF or BF'ers. LOL! And what if you hear tree knocking and there is no wind? The other possibility is woodpeckers. Hear that all the time.

ah...woodpeckers! yes, i hear them from time to time..the trees knocking together is a very different sound - it kinda scared me the first time i heard it...my reflex was "run!!" until i realized it was the wind. Then again, with so many trees fallen during windstorms, i still kinda want to run!

There are those who claim success with this 'tried and true' method. What are the odds that it is a response from another human who just merely heard the original thunk?Whatdoyathink? [The bold text is added by me] Yes, it is quite possible that it could be another person answering back after hearing something in the woods that he/she was not expecting. Hell; it may even be the sound of a tree falling, either from age/damage or another animal taking it down. It may even be a pair of trees knocking together in the wind (as Chrissie aluded to earlier). It goes without saying that if you were able to get to an area, then someone else would most likely be able to also. So I won't even bother with the whole "no one else was out there" bit. But I have had experiences where the whole forest suddenly went silent, not a peep from anything, then moments later one [1] to three [3] knocks were heard. These came from a good distance, I will not hazard a guess as to how far, because I have no way of knowing. I did not answer the knocks, and within five [5] to ten [10] minutes the creatures of the forest started up their woodland symphony once again. Could the creatures have been reacting to my presence? That is something that cannot be ruled out, but I had been in the area for three [3] or four [4] days & this would be the first time it had occurred. I had another occurrence at Brown Creek where definite sign had been found, and by sign I mean footprints, (not tree breaks/limb formations & that sort of stuff). At around 02:00 I heard two [2] very loud knocks echo down the creek to where I was was camped. I "knocked back", but recieved no reply. I would have to guess that someone (the usual camper) would not be walking around in known bear territory at night hammering on trees. Could someone have been trying to play a trick on me? Perhaps, but my doubt weighs heavy with that. Few knew where I was going to be at, and I do not think that I am important enough to be hoaxed. Does Sasquatch have the mental power to use this form of communication? Is it even a form of communication? No one has the authority to say either way. Yet. This could be argued ad nauseum. Some think that the creature uses tree knocking, other do not. In my opinion, it comes down to what you have experienced.

Some other possible causes of alleged tree knocking (other than wind, people and woodpeckers) are grouse sounding their mating "thumps," and skunks that alarm call by drumming their hind legs on the ground or on a fallen log.

Aye, there is that also. I did not think of that when typing out the post. Thanks for including them.

The only knock I have heard which I couldn't attibute to any known source was a single loud resounding KNOCK in response to some of our screams. Definitely not the drumming or whooping of grouse. In my opinion it would have required human or greater strength.

Actually I had read somewhere recently that a sound similar to the knocking could be achieved by clapping cupped hands in front of open mouth. It works much better when wearing large ski gloves. You can imagine the sound big sasquatch hands would make infront of their large oral cavities. It was just something being discussed on another site I thought Id mention here.

Hi I have an open mind about things and always just smile about my brother in law a big bush man who has told me about how he has spent his life on Dumas mountain and knows every sound of the animals and has heard some Stargell howl kind of scream sounds that he said were so loud you would Ned a megaphone to reach and you could even feel them.
However I have a story that gave me the fact I needed. I went to hike up pier e lake when I started to feel we were being followed and watched and was very eerie also small snapping sounds like a heavy animal, I naturally assumed bear and was very worried.
We lef and when we came back out to the logging road I heard the oldest clearest knock of a large branch or rock bashed against a tree 3 times and when I say loud I mean like something heavy and it was an intention sound no other sounds, no wind, and a feel of being watched and warned. Again I thought bear warning us away it was may so. Knew jot a deer and have heard deer hit trees this was like I iced up a branch and struck the tree but big ad with some serious weight. The after we carried on again and closest and more alarming and then again until we ,over off towards the bottom forest to the car park and then I felt like we had been warned away. It is my theory from what others have stated and their situations this ma actually be a territorial method or warning method . It was not till being home and studying bear actions and other accounts I realized I had finally had the proof to make me believe Sasquatch was not just a hype rumor it is real and after lengthy research to others experiences I feel tha this is a very valid reason behind this a animals actions.
Please people e-mail me David_Goddard@Hotmail.com I wish to learn more to find out how to contribute and to help people put my theory into more testing or increase it's proving.please give ,e recognition on this theory but please add and increase it's proof as much as came be done for people to learn more from and establish more about this illusive creature.

Personally I have never hear a wood knock that would lead me to believe Sasquatch did it. It could be because I have been going into the woods since I was small and I learned what made what sounds from my dad and later my experience.

Bears sometimes scratch their backs by rubbing up vs a tree.... which could potentially knock against another tree or the branches of said tree knocking against another set of branches.. unlikely this would be heard at night however.. cheers charlie

Trees are indeed noisy , well as far as plants go and a forest of them loaded with branches is sure to cause some ruckus even with a breeze. As most know trees by the sheer weight of their mass can crack and pop throughout the day , especially if a breeze is blowing but its not needed , trees will make crack noises when still.
a few years ago I cut threw a wooded trail on a walk when a 100ft or so tree fell to the left of me a hundred feet away , 10 minutes later another large tree fell , I heard and seen both the trees/tops falling threw the forest. Some of the hyper Sasquatchers would easily interpret this as clear warning signs a angry Sasquatch is in the area.
