This is my one and only 'encounter' if you can call it that. It happened in the summer, spring of 1977, I was 17 at the time, in Burnaby, by the Burnaby Golf course. The golf course at the time was surrounded by forest, which had trails, that some people used, seemed mainly me and my friends did at the time. This forest went right up Burnaby Mountain, right over down to the Barnett highway, and across the inlet was more wildernesses. Now by the Golf course the entire area is developed, townhouse complexes, houses everywhere. Anyways back then where this strip mall is with a pub was basically a swamp, and a trail that went along beside the road that runs down parallel to the golf course entrance road. This happened on the corner of Woodbrook Pl and Burnwood dr/Phillips Ave. Looking at Google map it shows this creek as Eagle creek now, back then it had no name. This small creek was at the start of this trail, which you had to walk through to get to the other side or start of the trail. My friends were out late that night up this trail walking along it when they felt heard, and saw a large figure in the bush as they were walking down this trail. They got to the part where the creek started and all of them discussed how they saw, and heard something that freaked them all out. Some said they walked by it on the trail, and another one was at the start of the creek area, who didn't go down the trail with the others and could hear a noise that sounded like someone was dropping stones up the creek and the sounds were getting louder and louder, like someone was dropping larger and larger stones. Then it stopped and he heard it go through the bush. I wasn't present at that time, but after this they came to my parents’ home where I was living at the time, they told me what happened. I was all for going back, and said lets go back again and look. We took clubs with us, baseball bats etc. to protect ourselves, we were young and dumb, what did we know. Anyways we ran into another friend of ours who was driving his car, we asked him to join us so he could shine his lights on the trail. When we go to the start of the trail, before we crossed the creek, we found a large footprint, big foot, with all the toes, and it was big. We were trying to get our friend with his car to drive up closer so we could see better with the lights, but he came to close wouldn't stop and ran over it. So we thought lets go into the trail, as we walked down the bank of the creek to cross it, we see another foot print in the mud, this one was so easy to see, again large foot with all the toes showing. Just then a cop pulls up, he gets out and tells us he got a report that a gang of people were walking around with clubs. We told him about what happened, and showed him the foot print which we could clearly see with his flashlight. We asked him to go with us down the trail cause he had a gun. He didn't want anything to do with that after looking at the foot print. He just shined his flashlight down the trail and told us that if we ever see something like this again to call the police.
The next day a friend of mine who lived in the same complex had a canoe, so we took it and brought it to the creek to see what was up that creek. We paddled up for a while, and after seeing where this creek went, and how deep it was, I knew that no sane person would be walking through that creek in the middle of the night. Now this whole are has been developed, but back then it was wilderness right up the mountain and down the other side to the Barnett inlet.
