Thanks for the link, mariner. It's an interesting report, but I have reservations about sound-only reports. If a witness hears a sound, AND sees the creature making that sound, then it carries real weight, otherwise, its just a strange noise from an unknown source. In this case, the two-tone nature of the sound immediately made me think "owls".

tbird, I've not heard or read any reports that mentioned ventriloqy, but have read of them being accomplished mimics. Again, I would only give those any belief if the person making the report actually saw the BF mimicking some other animals vocalizations, otherwise it's just a mistaken attribution. There's just dso much that we don't know about them, that's what keeps me interested and searching.

In this case, the two-tone nature of the sound immediately made me think "owls". Yep. And since she mentioned a "whoop" that was answered by a higher-pitched response we can probably close the case on this one. The likely culprit is the Great Gray Owl which is native to BC and all over the south coast. The whoop is the female. The higher pitched reply is the male. Here is a list of some of the more common Great Gray Owl sounds and calls... Cornell Lab of OrnithologyAs Sawone, BillR, Thomas and myself discussed the other day, many people here in BC over-estimate their experience and knowledge in the bush. Quite simply people don't know the animals that are around them, and what sounds they make. They would rather run around the bush on ATVs, and in 4x4s than walk quietly on a trail pausing to watch over a meadow or swamp. And when they hear a weird sound instead of quietly going to investigate the source of the sounds, they retreat to the safety of the car or campfire. Sorry if I sounds like an arsehole. I'm not trying to put people down, I just have a pet peeve with the BFRO Class B sound reports.
