Before this walk, I knew nothing of Sasquatch, believing them to be fictional as the school library where I volunteered, labelled them as such.
I was open-minded when my new friends, Faye and Collin, told me about some encounters they had out-of-town as well as one of on one of our local trails: They never got to finish cause they heard something BIG and two-footed, coming down the mountain side both times at them at the same spot of the trail. He is a big fellow, having hiked the woods for years by himself.
I couldn't wait to get out there and see for myself so while our husbands went to work the next day; I grabbed my sister and picked up Faye on the way. Just us three girls.
I was pleasantly surprized to see the trail wasn't thick and over-grown like what I was used to. Its a beautiful flat open trail on the edge of town with farming on one side of the trail with barbed-wire fence, and on the other side, a wild rugged Mountain range with the odd side-trail that veered off up the mt side. I couldn't help but notice how peaceful and quiet it was. I ran ahead and hollared back "This isn't so bad. Its like a walk in the park."
The distance was growing between us. Not because I was rushing ahead so much as they were constantly stopping, and looking and trying to peer into the deep woods and pointing and whispering to each other.
As we got closer to the "Hot Spot" where Faye and Collin had their two encounters, NOTHING happened....... ....... (!)..... And I expected Nothing. It was just too peaceful. We kept on going.
Along the way, they continued to stop, and point and confer to one another asking me if I had heard anything. No; but all along, I was thinking to myself, they sure had an over-active imagination.
I eventually got tired of their constant stopping so skipped ahead of them, feeling very comfortable, just enjoying the scenery.
But then something caught my eye that stopped me in my tracks. It was a tree alongside the trail, the size of a city street lamp; covered with moss, except one section of it from 7' high: The moss and even the bark was stripped bare for about 1-2 feet. It was so wierd, the rest of the tree above and below was untouched. I couldn't help staring at it. I stood there debating whether or not it was worth taking a picture, as I was down to my last two pictures ( before digital cameras) and I needed to save my valuable film in case we ran across the REAL thing (if you know what I mean)
The girls eventually caught up; showed only polite interest and kept on going. I'm thinking to myself... wait a minute (!).. I'm onto something here!!!!
I was still glued to this tree but they were already 20-30 steps ahead of me so I hastened to catch up.
I was now starting to feel not-quite-right. :-/Maybe I was starting to scare myself. (Note: Up to this point, I was always ahead of them, never feeling scared at all)
They had now past me leaving me all alone. :-/And now, they had become separated as well. I could see my sister in the lead further down the trail, nearing a bend. We had all somehow become separated from each other (!) which made us a perfect target for what was to come. I hastened to catch up. I barely took a few steps when I heard the STRANGEST NOISE on our left (farm side) We had long since run out of farmland and were now surrounded by woods.
I've heard wind coming thru the trees before and even though there was a slight breeze, this was so INTENSE.... It just HIT you like a Slap in the Face!!! It was soooo Loud, we all stopped in our Tracks!!! It was a LOUD low-pitch sound.... like someone blowing into a Bottle, but stronger. It was louder than a fog horn and lasted longer than anybody could blow!
I wasn't sensing anything wierd (and wondered if it was just me that heard it) but it did unnerve me enough to ask if they had heard that.
I was glad to see they were frozen in their tracks too. As we stood there.... still separated from one another; unable to move... trying to ..identify.. analyze what happened...what it was.... As if to answer us.. (!) came CRASHING from the right (mountainside)
You didn't have to tell me twice! I had just read about their INTIMIDATION DISPLAY, and did I feel intimidated??? Oh Yes!!! Even after just reading about it in Mr. Bindernagel's book... I still wasn't prepared for this!!!!!!!!
I did an immediate about-face and headed back. I'm sure the girls must have thought I was leaving them behind, but I was trying to show 'them' by my body language, that I was complying to their wishes.
All along, my sister was still left behind; not moving!!!! Whats wrong with her???! We hollared at her. Very cautiously she steps forth. She tells us later, that she had to walk directly by the source of all the commotion, expecting something to jump out at her at any moment.
On the way back, the "crashing" cont'd from the mt. side. When I finally got within sight of green pastures and farming, I took a big gulp of air , relieved to have left 'them' F-A-R b-e-h-i-n-d us...... but just then, again as if to tell me... "YOU'RE NOT OUT OF THE WOODS YET" !!!!!!!!.. There came more CRASHING!!!!!
It was the Loudest yet, and right BESIDE me!!!! It sounded like a huge tree being uprooted and about to come crashing down on us!!!...On ME!!!!!!!!
I was thinking this breeze must have really picked up and we're right in the middle of a freak storm. I was getting ready to duck if need be. Talking with the others later, as we all retold our experiences, they described that I did, in fact, have my arms crossed over my head.
That was my first experience... I wondered for a long time how 'it' could have managed to jump across the trail like that, without me seeing it (In order to do the blowing sound on the left and then the crashing on the right) How did it do that? Swing from the tree -tops? Its taken me years to realize that there was more than just ONE. ;D
I'm glad I didn't see them . That would have been too much for my system to handle. This alone, was already more than enough.
What was it that attracted them to us? Faye's husband had told us to bang rocks along the way and hollar, giving out a Loud aggressive shout to scare off the bears. That would get their attention alright. Or was it the fact, us three women all had long hair? Faye's blond hair would definetely have stood out!
I'm sure there's a lesson here: Body language says it all. Don't go LOOKING for them .Let them find you. How were we to know, by chasing off bears we were aggravating the Sasquatch. They probably took it as a threat.
