As the thread title says, "How do I get started". I've always been interested in sasquatch stories, reported sightings, etc. in the lower mainland of BC. We live on the base of Bell Mt. right by Lake Errock on Harrison Bay, minutes away from one of the most studied areas. I guess what I'm asking is as a complete rookie with bush knowledge, do you just stumble across prints, disturbed areas, etc. while out driving? Are there certain geographic structures that you look for? I ran into Thomas Steenberg at the Lake Errock gas station earlier this week and wanted to ask him but he was using the phone. If anyone has any advice for a rookie like myself, I would appreciate it.
Thanks in advance

Hi Brad,
How are you? You live right in the sasquatch country. There are reports all along Highway 7 to Hope. There are also quite a few reports from Morris Valley Road (Chehalis River campsite) all the way up Harrison Lake. There are two historical "hot spots"; one is Morris Mtn/Chehalis and the other one is the Mystery Valley (around 20 Mile Bay on the west side of Harrison Lake). Thomas doesn't live that far away from you. Sometimes we head out to Harrison west. You are more than welcome to join us. I can send you a message about how to contact Thomas (his internet is down these days). I am should that he loves talking sasquatch!
cheers, seb

Hello Brad,
The 'field' is wide open for you, my friend. A drive into a 'key' area is good. Get out on foot, and possibly cover some ground. And watch out for the 'bear-type' that chased Thomas. It's not really Sasquatch we're worried about while out in the woods. It's the other creatures, including man.
Try and stay still at times and just listen to your surroundings. There are more hunters seeing the species while using 'tree-stands' during hunting season. The Sasquatch has stumbled upon them.
I ran into the Sasquatch in '74 - totally by accident. And we went for a drive in '85 - (yes)...looking for the thing - we ran across it. (We had taken hundreds of drives, or walks.) We were just lucky. And that's how it works...as there are thousands out there looking for a needle in a haystack.
Good luck.

Drive slowly and keep your eyes open. Sometimes you can spot footprints from the car. Watch for large young trees twisted at above 6' height. Drive with the windows down, and listen for whoops, howls or knocks. You can try call blasting, or making some whoops and knocks of your own. Once you find a likely location, start habituating them to you. Every time you visit, leave a salty and sweet treat behind (nothing that attracts bears, something small like maybe candy) so they associate your presence with yummy things. Some people invest in motion-sensor tripped game cameras that they set up high in trees in likely feeding or watering locations, or in recording equipment to get sound bites. People carry specimen baggies, gloves, and some plaster at times for bagging samples if you happen to get lucky. Take a camera too, one with film option is a great idea. Be survival smart when you go out there. Good luck!

Read about the subject! Read Read Read. From that you will save a lot of time by documenting others limited success and the many failures, as well as ideas that are still up in the air. Make up your own mind about what might be possible and what might not be. Keep an open mind..but not so open that you push aside good solid facts and gravitate towards 'fringe' thinking which is so prevalent in this field! Keep your God Given common sense about the creature and the possibilities. and don't look for easy fixes by giving this creature superior abilities. It is just an animal, if it exists at all! Why was it important for me to make that last statement? Because one should always approach a mystery with skepticism....even being skeptical about the possibility that a mystery exists. That is healthy thinking. And Critical thinking!
