Well, something with hands, so a primate, or a beaver. But beavers usually stay near water, they build their lodges in the water. Was there water nearby? Or was it in the middle of the woods? Primates include people, of course.

Usually the simplest solution is the correct one. I would say it was made by human hands. After all, who but a human would need such a thing?

I found this up a steep side of a mountain as you can see the view looking down upon banff the terrain was very steep hillside the stick formation was near the edge of a wooded tree line about 150 feet away from a paved road leading to the top of a ski hill, the formation it didnt seem very high, but the wooden pieces were very long, oh yes and there was no river or water nearby.

Well, thanks for taking a picture and taking note of it. Sometimes bits of data will fit in somewhere at a later date and it is good to take note even if there is no immediate obvious explanation.
Also, having a good look at the picture, it does look like there is some kind of animal in there. Perhaps some hobo or some kids built it as a temporary night shelter and an animal took it over?

What a gorgeous area! I wonder about the pile of "logs" in that i have several similar looking piles on my acreage. I pile them like that so when burning season comes i can torch it with little effort. I sure do hope no animals use it as a shelter though, or if they do, they vacate before it ignites!! Yikes. Very interesting indeed, Traildogg. Has anyone on the WCS Forum run traildogg's original photo through Adobe Photoshop or U-Lead Photo Impact at 200 % magnification or greater? Just wondering what that dark matter or shadow might be inside the pile of old wood?

Re. speculation about an animal inside the 'structure'. IMHO the image is not sufficiently in focus (camera shake and the digital point and shoot curse [slow shutter speeds]) to clearly make anything out in the dark shadow. I suggest it is a dark shadow/interior of the wood pile visible in that one section of wood debris. Also if you observe the immediate vicinity around the pile appears quite 'clean' or purposely cleared of debrsi, possibly explaining the 'pile'. there may be mice or other small rodents in there, sure. -added: also the opening is rather small

Yes! How silly! It is the long sought for..home of the....pygmy squatch! Probably a slash pile for burning that some kids made a hole in!

Well he did hear the sounds too, it wasn't just that black shape (the first image shows it better, and the original would probably be the best to look at).

yes the sounds were unusual never heard anything like that at first i thought they were the jake brakes off highway trucks driving below ecoing in the mountains, but later dismissed that theory, because i could not pinpoint the exact location of the sound I decided it wasnt a wise idea to walk up to the object and get to get a better look besides i had 3 small children with me near the car a which was parked at the look out, the odd thing was that i heard them 3-4 times over the course of 15-20 minutes in that area i spent taking pics of the scenery and family, could it have been a bear maybe, but the fact that i scanned the forest and could not find a bear could mean that what ever was making the sounds was deliberately hiding or trying to conceal its location, the sound felt like it ecoed around me, it was low pitch from the gut it didnt sound like any human could have produced it.
