Hi All:
Got a call the other evening from my old friend Dan Gerak owner of the Pitt River Lodge. In our conversation Dan mentioned that he recently found fresh tracks (one set in the snow) of possibly three separate grizzly bears that have moved into the upper Pitt River watershed. Dan stated that the one set of tracks he found in the snow up in the Blue Creek area were made by an extremely large (possibly a boar) grizzly bear.
Dan also mentioned that in over the past year the transplanted elk herd in the upper Pitt River watershed has doubled in size to roughly 40 animals. Conservation officers stated to Dan that the elk herd may be drawing grizzly bears into the valley.
In any case, if you plan on doing any fishing, hunting or hiking in the upper Pitt River region in the future please use precautionary measures (like wearing bear bells, making noise while walking the river and carrying a firearm for protection) to avoid bear encounters.
Always better to be safe than sorry when in bear country.
