I've been reading through some of the newer reports and sitings of BF on sites I visit, and a lot of people are reporting the stench of BF. I started thinking about it, and came up with a theory. Don't blow it out of the water right away guys , but I was thinking that perhaps the smell of each BF is slightly different, and thus is a way for the creatures to identify each other? Perhaps this is a way for BF to identify their friends from strangers, and perhaps mates and/or prospective mates? Lessien

Hi Lessien, Welcome to the West Coast Sasquatch Research forum. I have heard your theory on bigfoot's unpleasant smell mentioned a couple times over the years on different forums. Seems possible. Bushman

Also, in the book "The Locals", a theory was put forth that the Sasquatch can control the release of the odor, perhaps using it as a warning or repellent to other animals or people.

Mammals use smell to ID individuals from the same species or other species all the time. So, it is entirely possible to have Sasquatch use scent as part of their communication. But most higher primate's sense of smell isn't that great. So it is possible but not probable.

Unwashed humans are quite pungent. Also humans that have been skunked by a skunk are also quite pungent. Humans that happen to wallow a lot in swamps might be quite rotten eggy pungent too. Ditto for Sasquatch?

Male goats urinate on themselves to attract females, wonder if this applies to sasquatch?

now I'm not?? when I tried to respond an error message came up stating I did not have permission to respond to this board? Can someone tell me why? Or will I just be ignored like I have been all along? And why was I ignored all along? Now that the prints under the Groat Bridge in Edmonton is out there and the Edmonton Journal is wanting to do a piece on this and I had no response from anyone one here in the first place? I never intended to have any bad rapport with anyone here it just really upset me that no one here seemed to care about what I had come across. I was under the impression that the W.C.S.R.O we're a group of mature responsible people interested in sasquatch here in Alberta but since I never received any response to my backyard bigfoots in edmonton post I wasnt sure anymore if this was true. I hope to receive a response in regards as to what I did wrong in the first place that I deserved to be ignored?? Thanks, Max.

Max, PM the Mod. I'm sure that's not the case, but this is not an overbusy board--still quite new, I guess.

Max: Firstly, you must be "logged in" as a member of the WCSR forum or you will always receive the error message that you stated. We had far too many visitors coming to the forum (and not logging in) and posting their funny stuff. Secondly, this is "not" the WCSRO forum. This is the West Coast Sasquatch Research forum and we are based in or out of British Columbia and "not" Alberta. While members of this forum living in Alberta are welcome to post or discuss sightings in that province, our main objective is to investigate possible sasquatch sightings, track finds or other evidence from British Columbia. Lastly, if you would like to contact Sean from the WCSRO to discuss any Alberta-related sasquatch information, he may be reached at the following e-mail address: Six_Foot_Stride@hotmail.com . Hope this clears things up. Ken

Getting back to the sasquatch smell topic. It seems to me that all the possibilities mentioned here are possible. But I find that maybe 1 in every 10 reports make any mention of oder at all? And in most cases where oder is mentioned 4 out of 5 times the smell was detected after the subject had moved off. I tend to go along with the gland which gives off a oder when the animal suddenly feels stressed or threatened. Like what would happen if they are watching people and it suddenly realizes that it has been spotted. Both Chimps and gorillas have such a reaction when they suddenly feel threatened. Now most printed material on this subject gives the reader the false impression that these creatures stink to high heaven at all times! When A witness really gos overboard with the description of the creatures pungent oder, That to me is a sign they are probably making up the story.

Personally I have never smelled the smell so I cant comment on that, but a lady yesterday had mentionned how male goats really smell as they urintate on themselves to attract the females, I wondered if out of all the bf reports of the smell where sexual identity of squatch was positively identified could they be all male reports or sightings??? Has anyone ever had an encounter with a female bf and reported the smell or are all the reports of smell males in the sighting or encounter?? Catch my drift? But curiousity killed the cat so if I ever spot one I wont go running at it to see if my theory could be correct, tis why I wonder about reports? But how many of those are false/hoax reports?? The whole phenomenon of this nature is frustrating enough to start off with you have hoaxes added into it. I dont believe everything I read, so.... has there ever been anyone here who experienced a female sasquatch encounter close enough to smell it? as reports really cant be trusted and hoaxes and that's all there seems to be lately, seems to me lately a hoax comes out every week, sightings arent up, hoaxes are! really irks me. the gland theory?? if chimps and gorillas do it.. Max [/quote] Indeed there has. The most famus female of all. Both Roger patterson and Bob Gimlin said that a strong oder was detected by them at the film site after the creature was gone. Bob Has told me on more than one ocasion that nothing oder wise was detected before or during their encounter, but after it was all over they detected an unplesant smell lingering on the film site, which disapated after only a few minutes. thanks Thomas, that totally rules out my theory about the males urinating on themselves. So it is more or less pointing to glands.

I feel that it is something glandular, for sure. But there has not been enough reports about sightings accompanied by smell to draw any conclusions. I believe as Thomas mentioned..most smells are not accompanied by a coroberating sighting they are just put out there to stand alone. Whether they have something to do with Sasquatch presence..who knows?
